Chase Utley Update

By dtb23

Chase Utley played in a minor league game on Saturday. He went 2-4, and played 4 innings at second base. Utley struck out twice but he also had a base hit and a ground rule double. This was the first game action the Phils’ second baseman has seen since Game 5 of the World Series.

Chase should be able to take the field with the big league club early next week, and it looks like he will be ready for the season opener or April 5th.

It appears safe to draft Utley as the top second baseman on draft day.

  1. Not only that, but he’s still the front-runner for National League MVP.

Oh sorry … there’s that Phillies bias again. What championship was it that they won? Oh, yeah … the last one.

  2. From today’s Inquirer:

Utley went 2 for 4, with a double and two strikeouts, and played four innings in the field during a minor-league intrasquad game at the Carpenter Complex in Clearwater, Fla.

According to manager Charlie Manuel, the team decided several days ago that their three-time all-star, who underwent right hip surgery last November, would play yesterday.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the decision was made collectively by Utley and team personnel.

“We felt like he was ready to get into one and test the waters,” Amaro said.

Amaro said that after the intrasquad game team trainers told him Utley was “tired, but it was a good workout for him. We’ll have to see what happens, how he feels tomorrow morning, and kind of progress him day by day.”

Amaro said that while Utley has been eager to play, the second baseman has resisted the temptation to return before his hip was ready.

“He knows what is at stake, and how important it is for him to be healthy in the long term,” Amaro said. “This was probably a test date for him, and we’ll see how he comes out of it.”

Manuel said that the team would proceed with caution.

“We’ll take it easy on him,” Manuel said. “He’s not ready for me to just turn him loose and start playing every day. We’re going to kind of break him in.”

As a Mets fan I hope Chase is healthy and ready to go. The only way to erase the memories of two straight choke jobs is to beat the best Phillies team possible. Can’t wait to get this race started….it’s going to be another fun year.
