Don’t Believe the Hype

By mrcane

Player A:  27 HR  91 RBI  85 RS  5 SB

Player B:  17 HR, 71 RBI, 95 RS, 29 SB

Player C:  34 HR, 96 RBI, 96 RS, 3 SB

Player D:  24 HR, 84RBI, 69 RS, 7SB

Looking at these numbers its hard to tell which player is worth the highest pick.  Player B is the most well-rounded, Player C has the most power….who is your pick?

The ADP for the players are 44, 169, 139 and 109 respectively.  They are Vlad, Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye and Joey Votto.  Its not worth picking Vladdy anymore when there are comparble parts to choose from much later.  Don’t buy into names, buy into numbers.

  1. Where does Grady Sizemore fit in with that group?

33 HR, 90 RBI, 101 RS, 38 SB. I think he’s one of the best players in the game today.

Grady Sizemore should be the first OF taken in any league. He’s slightly more valuable in points league than in 5×5 due to his great on-base % yet his batting average will probably not crack .300. Either way, I’m taking him as the 1st OF everyday.

I agree on Grady as the #1, he’s only 26 and now entering the prime of his career.

As for Vlad this is a great point. His avg. draft position is obviously due to MVP level play of a few years ago. Unfortunately he has knee problems and he’s looking much older than 33. The question is can he get healthy enough to play closer to 2006-2007 levels:

    2006 .329 92R 33HR 116RBI 15SB
    2007 .324 89R 27HR 125RBI 2SB
    2008 .303 85R 27HR 91RBI 5SB

Chances are he’ll be closer to 2008, so I agree – let someone else buy into this name.

  3. I don’t know. BA and power numbers have been dropping. Maybe he finds something this year, but Vlad is a big risk. The rewards are great but the consequences are dire.

  4. Very Nice Blog.. with my best wishes.
